Wakefield Map Poster & Print
Wakefield grew on rising ground above the River Calder, and the map still shows it. The river curves along the southern side, the old town centre sits on the slope above it, and main roads radiate outward like the spokes of a wheel. The pattern is typical of a Yorkshire market town that became a county centre: compact at its heart and spreading steadily outward.
The cathedral, whose spire is the tallest in Yorkshire, marks the centre of the street plan. Down by the river, the medieval Chantry Chapel stands on Wakefield Bridge. It is one of only a handful of bridge chapels still standing in England. Nearby, The Hepworth Wakefield gallery, designed by David Chipperfield, sits right at the water's edge beside the weir.
A Wakefield map poster shows the city at a scale where the Calder, the rail lines and the terraced streets around the centre all read clearly. Open fields and old coalfield land lie to the east and south, so the built-up area has a definite outline. It is an honest portrait of a place shaped by the wool trade, coal and county administration.

Cathedral centre
Westgate, Kirkgate and Northgate lead into the cathedral precinct. The way the main roads meet at the heart of town still shows the medieval layout.
Chantry Bridge
The old stone bridge over the Calder carries the Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin. This fourteenth-century chapel is among the few bridge chapels still standing in England.
