Zenica lies in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the valley of the Bosna River about seventy kilometres north of Sarajevo. The valley shapes everything on the map: the city stretches along the river in a long, narrow band, with the main road and railway running beside the water and residential districts climbing the lower slopes on either side. Beyond them, forested hills close in.
Zenica has been one of the country's main industrial centres since the late nineteenth century, when an ironworks was established here, and the steel plant beside the river remains its largest landmark. The plant's grounds appear on the map as an extensive area of large blocks and rail sidings, clearly different in texture from the housing estates nearby.
The city's stadium, Bilino Polje, has often hosted the national football team, and the A1 motorway now runs through the valley past the city. A Zenica map poster shows an industrial valley city in clean line work: the river, the long spine of road and rail, and the mountains rising on either side.

The large steel plant beside the river occupies a vast area of halls, yards and rail sidings, a distinctive industrial block that stands apart from the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Residential districts climb the slopes on both sides of the valley before giving way to forest, so the city's outline is long and narrow, tightly framed by hills.
