Abashiri is on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. On a map, the coastline curves along the northern edge of the town, and the harbour has its breakwaters and piers. The second is Abashiri Prison. Its historic wooden buildings are now an open-air museum, and the prison itself has become part of Japan's popular memory. Mount Tento rises above the town, offering a view of the sea and lakes.
