Acerra sits on the fertile, level plain northeast of Naples, in a landscape of fields, market gardens and small towns joined by long straight roads. On a map the historic centre forms a compact, irregular core around the baronial castle and the cathedral. Newer neighbourhoods extend outward in a looser grid.
