Af’abet lies in Eritrea, in country where the highlands begin to fall toward the lowlands and the Red Sea coast. From above, the town is a compact grid of low streets surrounded by rough, dry terrain. The town is best known in modern history for the Battle of Afabet in 1988, when Eritrean fighters overran a major Ethiopian army garrison here, a turning point in the long war for independence.
