Afşin sits in the northern part of Kahramanmaraş Province, on the broad upland plain it shares with neighbouring Elbistan. The elevation is high and the land is largely flat, so the town's streets spread without much interference from terrain. The name is widely known in Turkey through the Afşin-Elbistan energy complex, which draws on the lignite deposits of the surrounding basin.
