Ridge roads
The main roads follow the tops of the ridges. They form long, winding lines that give the map its distinctive branching structure.

Aizawl Map Poster & Print
Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is built along a series of ridges in the hills of north-eastern India, at roughly 1,100 metres above sea level. There is almost no flat land, so the map looks unlike most cities. Roads trace the ridgelines and bend with the contours, and buildings spill down the slopes on either side.
The main roads form long, looping lines rather than a grid. Steep lanes and stairways connect them, most too small to show at city scale. River valleys lie far below on both sides, the Tlawng to the west and the Tuirial to the east, and the town stops where the slopes become too steep to build on.
Aizawl began as a British military post in the 1890s. The city is often noted for its orderly traffic, with drivers waiting patiently in long queues instead of sounding their horns. An Aizawl map poster shows a city that has adapted entirely to its terrain, with every line of the street network following the shape of the hills.

Stacked slopes
Buildings cling to the hillsides below the ridges. On the poster, the built-up areas appear as narrow bands tracing the terrain rather than as blocks.
Valleys on each side
Deep river valleys flank the city to the west and east. They appear as broad, empty spaces that frame the settled ridges between them.

For Mizo families and anyone who has lived in Aizawl, the map holds the familiar shape of roads everyone knows by their bends. It suits a home far from the hills, as a reminder of the ridges and views that define the city.
Change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a name, a place or a year, and pick one of five styles. Noir works particularly well with the city's lines. The HD files cost $9 and cover six print sizes, and printed posters come on matte paper with an optional frame.
