Akron grew on high ground in north-east Ohio, at the highest point along the Ohio and Erie Canal, and its name comes from the Greek word for summit. The canal route still runs through downtown, and the Little Cuyahoga and Cuyahoga rivers cut valleys across the northern side of the city.
