Al-Qāsim lies in Babil Governorate, south of Hillah, on the flat alluvial plain between the Tigris and the Euphrates. From above, the town forms a compact cluster of streets surrounded by farmland crossed with irrigation canals. The town takes its name from the shrine of al-Qasim, a son of Imam Musa al-Kadhim, which is an important place of pilgrimage for Shia Muslims.
