Albany sits on the west bank of the Hudson River, close to where the Mohawk River joins it from the west. From above, the downtown streets rise from the riverbank up the slope toward the State Capitol. A highway runs along the river and partly separates the city from the water. Beyond downtown, residential neighbourhoods extend west in a mostly regular grid.
The Empire State Plaza, a huge complex of government buildings around a long reflecting pool, occupies a large rectangle next to the Capitol. Albany is one of the oldest continuous European settlements in the United States. It grew from the Dutch trading post of Fort Orange, founded in the 1620s.
