Albany stands on the Willamette River where the smaller Calapooia River joins it, in the middle of Oregon's Willamette Valley. From above, the downtown grid sits on the south bank, pressed against the river's curve. The Calapooia enters from the south and cuts a winding line through the western neighbourhoods. North Albany spreads across the water, on the Benton County side.
The town is the seat of Linn County and is known for its historic districts. The old residential streets hold one of Oregon's largest collections of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century houses, many of them Victorian.
