Allston sits on the south bank of the Charles River in Boston, and from above it looks like several street systems joined together. The river curves along its northern edge. The Massachusetts Turnpike and its rail corridor run east to west across the middle, and Commonwealth Avenue forms a broad line along the southern side, with side streets branching off it.
The neighbourhood has long been home to students and young renters, and it is known for the yearly turnover of leases at the start of September, when furniture lines the pavements. Harvard University has built its Allston campus along the riverbank, including its business school and athletic facilities.
