Almonte, in the province of Huelva in western Andalusia, is one of the largest municipalities in Spain by area. The town itself is compact and white, set among vineyards, olive groves and pine woods. The municipality, however, stretches far to the south, across a large part of Doñana National Park and down to the Atlantic coast.
Doñana is one of Europe's most important wetlands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where marshes, dunes and pine forest shelter huge numbers of migrating birds.
