Amesbury sits in the north-eastern corner of Massachusetts, just south of the New Hampshire line, where the Powwow River drops through the centre of town on its way to the Merrimack. From above, the downtown is a compact knot of streets around the river, with mill buildings and small squares, while residential neighbourhoods and roads spread outward over rolling ground.
Water power shaped everything here. Mills lined the Powwow, and in the nineteenth century Amesbury became known for building carriages and later car bodies, which made it a centre of the trade.
