Anan lies on the eastern coast of Shikoku, south of Tokushima, where the Naka River reaches the sea. From above the city is a mix of flat delta land and rugged coastline: waterways split the plain into separate districts, while to the south the shore becomes a sequence of small bays, headlands and islands backed by wooded hills.
Anan is closely associated with the LED. The blue light-emitting diode developed here at Nichia Corporation by Shuji Nakamura, work later recognised with the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, made efficient white LED lighting possible.
