Anserma occupies a high ridge in the western Andes of Colombia, in the coffee-growing country above the Cauca valley. The town's grid is squeezed by the terrain: straight blocks run along the crest, then stop abruptly where the land drops, leaving the edges of the map scalloped by ravines and winding rural roads that follow the slopes downhill.
It is among the older Spanish foundations in this part of Colombia, established in the late 1530s and named for the Indigenous Anserma people who lived here before the conquest.
