Armyansk is on the Perekop Isthmus, the narrow strip of land that connects the Crimean peninsula to the mainland. From above, the town is a compact grid of residential blocks and low houses on flat, open steppe. The Karkinit Gulf of the Black Sea lies to the west and the salt lagoons of the Syvash to the east. Few towns have such a clear geographic position.
The isthmus has been fortified for centuries. The remains of an old rampart and ditch known as the Turkish Wall cross the land near the town.
