Arnstadt is often counted among the oldest towns in Thuringia, with a first written mention in 704. On the map that age shows in the tight, irregular old town, where lanes converge on the market square and the course of the former walls still traces a rough ring. The Gera runs along the western side of the centre before heading north through the valley toward Erfurt.
Beyond that ring the pattern loosens into nineteenth-century blocks, railway lines and later housing estates spreading over gentle slopes.
