Aurangabad, officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023, sits in a broad valley on the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra. Low hills rise to the north. The Kham River passes the old city, and the historic core was once enclosed by walls pierced by many gates.
