Azamgarh lies on the Gangetic plain in eastern Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Tons river. From above, the river is the defining feature. It bends in broad curves around the older part of the town, so the densest streets sit on raised ground inside the meander, and fields and villages spread across the flat land beyond.
The town is generally dated to the seventeenth century, when a local chief named Azam Khan is said to have founded it, and it later became the seat of a district.
