Azul stands on the open pampas of Buenos Aires province, about three hundred kilometres south-west of the capital, and its map shows the classic plan of Argentine towns founded in the nineteenth century: a regular grid of square blocks centred on Plaza San Martín, with broad avenues framing the core. The Arroyo del Azul, the creek that gave the town its name, cuts across this order, curving through the city past the municipal park and the riverside bathing area known as the balneario.
