Balikpapan lies on the east coast of Borneo, facing the Makassar Strait. From above, the city covers hilly ground between the open sea to the south and Balikpapan Bay to the west, a long, sheltered inlet that reaches deep inland. The city grew around oil. Petroleum was discovered in the area in the late nineteenth century, and a large refinery still occupies part of the bay shore.
