Bamberg's old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and its plan explains why: it survived the Second World War largely intact. From above, the city divides into three historic parts. The Bergstadt, the hill town, climbs the western hills around the cathedral. The Inselstadt, the island town, sits between the two arms of the Regnitz.
