Basankusu is a town in Équateur province in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It stands at the confluence of the Lopori and Maringa rivers, which join here to form the Lulonga, a tributary that eventually flows into the Congo River. From above, water is the dominant feature, framing the town on several sides.
The built-up area is modest: a set of streets and plots gathered along the riverbanks, with roads and tracks leading inland into the surrounding forest.
