Basel is built where the Rhine turns sharply north, leaving the Alps behind on its way to the North Sea. The river divides the city into Grossbasel on the higher southern bank and Kleinbasel on the flatter northern side, and on a map this bend is the defining gesture: a broad curve of water with the old town gathered above it.
Grossbasel climbs to the red sandstone Münster on its terrace above the river, surrounded by lanes and squares that have kept their medieval pattern.
