Bazhong lies in the northeast of Sichuan province, in hill country that rises toward the Micang Mountains along the border with Shaanxi. The prefecture-level city covers a large rural area, and its population figure counts all of it. The urban centre itself is compact, shaped by the valley it occupies rather than by any master grid.
On a map the Ba River is the organising line. It loops through the city in a series of meanders, and the built-up area fills the flatter ground inside and alongside those loops.
