Bilzen lies in the Belgian province of Limburg, between Hasselt and Maastricht. On a map the town has a compact historic centre, with streets gathering around the market, surrounded by residential areas and a countryside of fields, orchards and villages. The Demer valley and the gentle slopes of the Haspengouw region give the landscape a soft, rolling character.
A few kilometres from the centre stands Alden Biesen, a former commandery of the Teutonic Order.
