Blitar sits on the plains of East Java, between the volcanic slopes of Mount Kelud to the north and the broad valley of the Brantas River to the south. From above, the town is compact and orderly. A loose grid of streets surrounds the central square, the railway cuts across from east to west, and rice fields press up against the edges of the built-up blocks.
The town's best-known site is the tomb of Sukarno, Indonesia's first president, who was buried here in 1970. The memorial complex appears on a map as a tidy enclosure among residential streets.
