Blythe sits at the far eastern edge of California, near the west bank of the Colorado River, which forms the state line with Arizona. The town is laid out on a simple grid, and Interstate 10 passes through on its way to the river crossing. Around it, the Palo Verde Valley spreads out as a flat expanse of irrigated farmland, sharply bordered by bare desert and mountains.
From above, the contrast is striking. Canals and farm roads divide the valley into regular fields, a geometry made possible by river water and early twentieth-century irrigation.
