Bobangui lies in the Lobaye prefecture in the southwest of the Central African Republic, southwest of Bangui, in a region of tropical forest and rivers. On a map it is a modest place: a handful of roads and tracks, with houses gathered along them and clearings opening in the surrounding woodland.
