Borken is the seat of the district of the same name in the western Münsterland, close to the Dutch border. Its historic centre is compact and nearly round, the outline of the medieval town walls still visible in the ring of streets that encloses it. The small river Aa flows past the old town, and from above the curve of the ring against the river makes the town instantly recognisable.
A few remnants of the old fortifications survive, including towers from the town wall, and the church of St. Remigius stands at the heart of the centre.
