Brakpan grew up on the gold reef of the East Rand around the turn of the twentieth century, and its layout still reflects that origin. The town centre is a regular grid of long, straight streets. Residential suburbs extend in similar blocks, and former mining land breaks the pattern with wide, open spaces.
The name is usually traced to a brackish pan in the area, and water still marks the map. Shallow pans and small dams are scattered around the town, their rounded shapes contrasting with the grid.
