Seen from above, Braunschweig has a clear centre. The river Oker splits and wraps around the old town, and those two channels still frame the core on the map. Inside that moat the streets follow the medieval plan, made up of five historic districts that once governed themselves before merging into a single city. Outside the water, a ring of parks marks where the fortifications stood.
This is the city of Henry the Lion. His bronze lion still stands on the square beside Dankwarderode Castle and the cathedral, and the animal has become the city's emblem. Braunschweig is also home to one of Germany's oldest technical universities.
