Bunbury lies about 175 kilometres south of Perth and is the main city of Western Australia's South West. Its layout is determined by water. The city centre occupies a narrow strip of land between the open Indian Ocean on the west and the calm Leschenault Inlet on the east. To the north, Koombana Bay forms a sheltered curve beside the port.
The Collie and Preston rivers enter the inlet nearby, and the map shows their estuaries as soft, irregular shapes against the sharp ocean shoreline.
