Burayu lies in Oromia, directly on the western edge of Addis Ababa, on the Ethiopian highlands. It has grown quickly in recent decades as the capital's population has spilled out. From above, the town looks like a series of new neighbourhoods stretching away from the main road toward the west, with the older core close to the highway.
The land is hilly and cut by small streams. Some streets follow the contours, while newer districts are laid out in regular blocks on flatter ground.
