Cananea is a town in the north of Sonora, not far from the border with Arizona. It sits at high elevation in grassland and mountains, and its history is tied to copper. The Cananea mine is among the largest copper operations in Mexico, and the open pits and tailings beside the town are visible on any map of the area.
The town has a straightforward layout: a grid of blocks set on sloping ground, streets running up towards the hills, and main roads leading out towards Arizona and the rest of Sonora.
