Candeias lies in the metropolitan region of Salvador, in the Recôncavo, the fertile area of low hills and valleys around the Bay of All Saints in Bahia. The town is a short distance inland from the northern shore of the bay. From above, its streets follow the uneven ground, curving between slopes rather than forming a strict grid.
The Recôncavo is where Brazil's oil industry took some of its first steps in the mid-twentieth century. Oil fields, pipelines and industrial sites are still part of the landscape around Candeias.
