Canudos Map Poster & Print
Canudos sits in the dry sertão of northern Bahia, surrounded by caatinga scrub and low hills. Its name is closely tied to Brazilian history: the settlement founded by the preacher Antônio Conselheiro was destroyed in the War of Canudos in 1896 and 1897, a conflict made famous by Euclides da Cunha's book Os Sertões.
The map shows an unusual layer of that history. The original site was later flooded by the Cocorobó reservoir, and the present town was built nearby. From above, the reservoir is a wide, irregular body of water with branching inlets reaching into the dry land, and the modern streets form a modest grid beside it.
