Caxambu sits in a valley in the south of Minas Gerais, part of the region known as the Circuito das Águas. From above, the town is shaped by its terrain. Streets follow the valley floor and then bend up the surrounding slopes, so the street pattern looks irregular and close to the ground rather than laid out on a single plan.
At the centre is the Parque das Águas, a large green space built around the mineral springs that made the town known. On a map it shows as a calm open area inside a dense ring of blocks.
