Chengannūr is a town in Alappuzha district, Kerala, on the banks of the Pamba River. The terrain here marks a transition between the low-lying backwater region to the west and the gentle midland hills to the east. From above, the town appears as a dense core of streets around its temple and market, loosening into houses spread among trees, paddy and waterways.
The Chengannur Mahadeva Temple is the best-known landmark in the town, and its compound forms a clear, rectangular space within the street pattern. In 2018, Chengannūr was among the places most severely affected by the Kerala floods.
