Cheyenne was founded in 1867 as the Union Pacific pushed its transcontinental line west across the plains, and the railroad still shapes the city's map. Tracks and yards run along the south side of downtown, with the historic depot at their edge. From there the street grid extends north toward the State Capitol and the residential neighbourhoods beyond.
The city sits at around six thousand feet on open high plains, and the land around it is wide and nearly treeless.
