Chinju, now usually written Jinju, is built along the Nam River, which bends through the city from west to east. The historic centre sits on the northern bank, and Jinjuseong Fortress rises on a bluff directly above the water. The fortress was the site of two major sieges during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s.
