Corrientes lies in northeastern Argentina, on the eastern bank of the Paraná River, just below where it meets the Paraguay River. On the map, a wide stretch of river runs along the northern and western edges. The city spreads inland from the water in a regular grid of square blocks, the pattern of Spanish colonial planning.
Founded in 1588, it is one of the oldest cities in Argentina. Its long riverside promenade, the Costanera, is a favourite place to walk.
