Couëron stretches along the north bank of the Loire just downstream from Nantes, where the river widens toward the estuary. The southern edge of the map is defined by water and wetland. Channels, islands and marshes lie between the town and the main river, and the built-up area extends inland in a series of neighbourhoods.
The town's best-known landmark is the Tour à plomb, a tall shot tower from the industrial era when lead works operated beside the river.
