Coulommiers lies in the east of Seine-et-Marne, in the valley of the Grand Morin, about an hour from Paris. The river divides into several arms as it passes through town, and the historic centre sits among them, so from above the old streets appear wrapped in water. The town gave its name to Coulommiers cheese, a soft cow's-milk cheese close in style to Brie, and it remains a market centre for the farmland around it.
