Cumbum lies in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, in the wide green floor of the Cumbum Valley. On a map the town is a dense knot of short, irregular streets. Around it the land breaks into a patchwork of field boundaries and irrigation channels, and to the west the contour lines of the Western Ghats rise quickly toward the Kerala border.
The valley is known for its grapes. Vineyards grow here almost all year, and the local black grape is one of the region's recognised agricultural products.
