Datun lies in the far north of Jiangsu, in Xuzhou's Pei County, on the low plain that stretches toward the lakes along the border with Shandong. The land is flat and intensively farmed. The area is associated with coal mining, and much of its modern growth came with the mines and related industry developed in the second half of the twentieth century.
