From above, Derbendîxan sits where the Sirwan River, also known as the Diyala, leaves a narrow gorge in the ridges of eastern Iraqi Kurdistan. The town's streets fill the lower ground between steep slopes. The contour of the land shapes the plan more than any grid does, so roads curve with the valley and stop where the hills get too steep.
The defining feature is the Darbandikhan Dam, built in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It holds back a long reservoir that spreads through the valleys upstream.
