Dikhil is the capital of the Dikhil Region in the south-west of Djibouti, not far from the border with Ethiopia. The land around it is arid and rugged, with volcanic rock, dry wadis and wide open plains. Dikhil has long been a stopping point on routes between the coast and the interior. It is the main town on the road toward Lake Abbe, a salt lake known for its limestone chimneys and flamingos.
