Downers Grove lies in DuPage County, west of Chicago, and its map is organised around a railway. The Metra BNSF line runs east–west through the village, and the compact downtown sits beside the tracks. North and south of it, residential streets spread out, a regular grid near the centre loosening into curving subdivisions and cul-de-sacs further out.
The village takes its name from Pierce Downer, who settled here in the 1830s. Downtown, the Tivoli Theatre, which opened in 1928, still shows films.
